“Post-Socialist Media Culture? Journalism and Popular Music in East Germany past 1989”
Past 1989, former socialist societies changed in many respects, also concerning their media systems and media content. Media influenced the transformation of societies and were part of the structural changes at the same time. Western media companies and popular culture gained a new influence. The lecture will analyze this general change for the very interesting special case of East Germany, the former GDR. I will show, how East German media took a different path in unified Germany than their West German counterparts. Both in the press and in music, a unique East German culture lingered on and promoted the formation of an East German identity. The economic and cultural crisis precipitated by Germany’s societal transformation strengthened the role of media operators, who wanted to distinguish themselves “from below” from contemporary culture, which was global and dominated by the West. The awakening of East German culture, especially in music, was dynamic and unexpected. But the price for this success was its marginalisation in the West.
